We rarely discuss 100 year old wool items except in a historical context, but we talk about 100 year old linens that are still in use today. What makes linen so special? This class will give you an introduction to linen fibres, both spinning and the use of. On the fibre side; What is a distaff? Why use a distaff? What makes a good distaff? You dress up a distaff? How do you manage an implement and the spindle/wheel at the same time? On the finished product side I will show examples of bast fibre use and how it wears in.
I take you through a modern look at the ancient tool of the distaff. We discuss and explore methods to dress and use a distaff. Using fibre art depictions in art (ancient and modern), we discuss examples that clearly show fibre manipulation with a tool.
Experience Level: Medium to advanced level spinning workshop. Students must already know how to spin and have equipment they are comfortable with.
